“What you wish to ignite in others must first burn within yourself.” says Jacqueline Dawes, Brookhaven Retreat’s founder. We are very proud to announce that Marlaina Kincaid, one of Brookhaven Retreat’s Primary Therapists, earned her Doctorate of Philosophy in Industrial Organizational Psychology from Capella University on Feb. 28, 2017.
Kincaid has a dual license as a Licensed Professional Counselor and Mental Health Service Provider (LPC/MHSP) in the state of Tennessee. Previously, she earned a master’s in Counseling Psychology from Capella University, and her bachelor’s in Psychology at the University of Tennessee. In addition, she holds certifications in Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy through EGALA and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.
Over the course of 14 years in the mental health field, Marlaina’s experience has been in residential, inpatient, and outpatient facilities providing expertise to children, adolescents, and adults. She has worked with most mental health disorders including dual diagnosis, substance abuse, psychosis, bipolar, depression, anxiety, impulse-control, and personality disorders.
She has also had extensive training in CBT, insight therapy, motivational interviewing, and Anthetic Relationship Therapy, to name a few. Marlaina is also trained in multiple trauma therapies such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy Level 1, 2 and 3 (1 and 2 through EMDRIA, and 3 with Laura Parnell), Beyond Trauma with Dr. Stephanie Covington, and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional through PESI.
Although she works with clients individually, she extends her passions in two weekly groups: Equine-Assisted Therapy and another group she developed to focus on the subject of happiness.
She has said, “Happiness is a state of being. If you are truly happy and content with yourself and your life, then you have a happy foundation that no one can take away.”
